No more Market Day at Central
For the very first time, the city will no longer have its market days at the City Central Market
This unusual declaration of "no market day" policy shocked city residents who are used to troop to the public market for bargain prices during Market Days which usually fall on Tuesdays and Fridays.
City Administrator Ed Macalandag said City Hall's decision to suspend the market days came into effect starting last July 1.
The stoppage of observing Market Days came as City Hall somewhat confirmed the unsanitary condition in the city's public markets.
The decision of the City Hall shocked residents especially old timers who have been used to observe Market Days.
Instead of coming up with concrete measures to address the sanitation in the markets, farmers from the towns were lectured to observe sanitation while the city government will improve the perimeters of the central public market where they used to vend.
Macalandag issued the notice on June 1, giving the farmers from Carmen, Jagna, Batuan and other towns one month to find an alternative once the suspension of the market days takes effect.
The suspension of market days will give the City Engineer's Office and the office of the market administrator enough time to put order in place and put asphalt overlay on the roads surrounding the area.
In the original plan, the area where farmers sell their products on market days set on Tuesdays and Fridays at the vicinity of the city's Central Public Market across the Integrated Bus Terminal was actually intended for the construction of waiting sheds for passengers bound for Lila, Valencia and other nearby towns.
Based on an ordinance, the city set the market days at the area on Tuesdays and Fridays of the week.
Usually, the farmer-vendors would already arrive by late afternoon of Mondays to prepare for the market day the following day and leave early morning of Wednesday. For the Friday market day, they would arrive by late afternoon of Thursday and leave early morning of Saturday.
From Tagbilaran, they would proceed to other towns for the market days there.
However, the area surrounding the city's Central Public Market had deteriorated into an odious swamp during the period the farmers occupied the area at least twice a week for the market days, according to city authorities.
It had also been noticed that the prices of their goods are the same as the prices in the stalls inside the public market, which defeated the purpose of having bagsakan or market days wherein farm products are supposedly sold at lower prices considering that they come straight from the farmers.
Authorities also learned that some middlemen get into the distribution chain which caused the unwarranted layers of price mark-up.The buying public ended as the biggest loser.
