MANILA, Philippines – An asteroid has been named after a
young Filipino scholar who won the second grand award in the recent 2011
International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) held in Los Angeles,
California.
Miguel Arnold Reyes, a Department of Science and Technology (DOST)
merit scholar, will get an asteroid named after him because of his
research, “Synthesis and Characterization of Composite Plastics from
Thermoplastic Starch and Nano-sized Calcium Phosphate for Film
Packaging.”
In the project, Reyes sought alternatives such as cornstarch, in making biodegradable plastic for film packaging.
The Philippine Science High School (PSHS) graduate will also take home $1,500 for his research.
The DOST has expressed its congratulations to Reyes, who joined other Filipinos who earlier had asteroids named after them.
“Reyes is a welcome addition to growing roster of future scientists
and engineers in the country which will take the Philippines to greater
heights. We are optimistic that Reyes will even outshine the asteroid
named after him as he pursues a science career,” Science Education
Institute-DOST officer-in-charge Dr. Leticia Catris said.
Another Filipino, Angeli Joyce Dy, was also victorious in the annual
ISEF. She won the 4th grand award for her research on milkfish serum as
an alternative media supplement for culture of A549 (human lung); and
HCT 116 (colon) carcinomas
The Capiz National High School student received a cash prize of $500.
